The purpose of this meeting was to allow the public an opportunity to provide their views and/or concerns to City Council regarding accessibility, diversity and inclusion issues.

Recognition of Indigenous Lands

The City of Oshawa is situated on treaty land that is steeped in rich indigenous history and is the present day home to many First Nations, Metis and Inuit people.  Today, we acknowledge that we are gathering on land covered under the Williams Treaties and the traditional territories of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

Councillor Giberson made a declaration of interest concerning the presentation of the Accessibility Improvement Awards as he is the Director on the Board of Parkview Place Senior Housing Residence which is a local business or organization in receipt of one of the awards.

Mayor Carter presented Accessibility Improvement Awards to Hearth Place Cancer Support Centre, Parkview Place Senior Housing Residence and resident Gail Smith whose contributions have resulted in greater opportunities for people who live, work and play in Oshawa.

Stephen Moenster, Chair, Oshawa Accessibility Advisory Committee provided an update regarding Oshawa's Accessibility Plan.

Uzma Danish, Chair, Community Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee provided an update regarding the activities of the Committee.

    That any member of the public wishing to address City Council concerning diversity, inclusion or accessibility issues be heard.

    Joelle Vanderwagen addressed City Council concerning accessibility issues with new residential development and noted that developers need to consider accessibility requirements when planning a subdivision. Joell Vanderwagen stated that she is impressed with Oshawa’s Accessibility Plan.

    Daniel Crosmas, volunteer member of the Community Diversity Equity and Inclusion Committee addressed City Council stating that he is an active advocate for persons with disabilities within the Indigenous Peoples community and reminded members of Council that not all disabilities are visible.

    Dorothy McFarlane addressed City Council concerning accessibility issues with new residential developments and noted that there is a great need for a beach mat and to accommodate persons in wheelchairs who would like to access the water as well as a wheelchair swing in the playground.  Dorothy McFarlane also expressed appreciation for the memorial bench in honour of Linda Tamburro.
